Tabernacle Baptist Church will host a History and Heritage event Sunday at 3:30 p.m. featuring live music from classically-trained vocalists Dr. Roderick George and Allison Sanders.

George is a music professor and Department Head for Vocal Studies at the University of Montevallo.

Sanders performed at the church’s event in 2016 and has performed throughout the state and region.

Additionally, the Selma High School choir will perform.

According to Pastor Otis Culliver, this is the church’s third year hosting the event in commemoration of Black History Month.

“We decided to begin this event as a way of celebrating the arts,” Culliver said. “Throughout history, African Americans have made significant contributions to the arts and many of those talented vocalists’ and musicians’ gifts were developed through the love and nurturing of the black church.”

Culliver also noted that Tabernacle has its own “great history” of developing musical talent.

The pastor is encouraging residents of Selma to join the celebration to be “renewed, reinvigorated and refreshed.”

“This event has become a part of our annual church calendar,” Culliver said. “I am excited to hear the performances of all participants and I look forward to an enriching and empowering experience as we celebrate our history through the arts.”
