The Selma to Montgomery 51 Mile Relay, which will set off from the Queen City March 23, has extended its early registration deadline to Feb. 3, allowing participants a little bit of leg room to get involved at a discounted price.
The relay will start off at Rexall Drugs in Selma and end at the State Capitol in Montgomery.
Teams with one to four members, known as Ultra Teams, can register for $760, and teams with up to nine members, Regular Teams, can sign up for $1,135.
Cyclists can also sign up to ride the historic route for $50 or $75 with transportation.
The relay is one of several events hosted by the Civil Rights Run Series (CRRS) that takes athletes along important treks relevant to the Civil Rights Movement.
“Selma to Montgomery is a very pivotal point in Civil Rights history,” said Vergil Chames, a CRRS founder. “We always think of this as our anchor event.”
The relay first took off from Selma last year and attracted more than 500 people to the city – for his part, Chames says this year’s numbers will “easily” surpass last year and he expects the “double or triple” that amount.
“The popularity of the event has grown within the community,” Chames said. “It’s just a historical route.”
Chames said there have already been a record number of cyclists who have signed up to take part in this year’s event and there are only a few slots left for people wanting to take on the relay by foot.
“We think this is going to be another great event,” Chames said. “The people of Selma have been very receptive to us. We’re very excited.”
