The winning act, Snackable, allows students to purchase snacks from the school to help fundraise for various school activities.

“This year, we had an amazing group of students participate in our Annual Congressional App Challenge,” said Rep. Terri Sewell, D-AL. “These students did an incredible job using science and technology in a creative way to help raise funds for school activities.

“Opportunities like the Congressional App Challenge are critically important because they spark the imagination and promote the growth of our talented young students in STEM-related fields,” Sewell said. “I know that each one of our participants worked hard and learned a lot about app development along the way. I am truly proud of all of the aspiring engineers and software developers that submitted entries.”

Boyd and Thomas, the Congressional App Challenge winners, are Robotics Club members and will be invited to Washington, D.C. to attend an official reception honoring the winners from congressional districts around the country. Their app also will be showcased in the U.S. Capitol for the next year and can be viewed on the Congressional App Challenge’s website. This is the first year since the competition’s inception in 2013 that Alabama’s 7th District will be represented in Washington, D.C.

Seventh-grade Science teacher and Robotics Club leader, Sherry Jackson, said that the app was a group effort from the entire Robotics Club.

The club is looking for sponsors to help fund the trip to Washington, D.C.
