A Tuscaloosa resident was killed in Orrville in a weekend hunting accident, according to Dallas County Coroner Alan Dailey.

The 11-year-old boy was found dead Sunday by his sister inside a shooting house hunters used. His identity was not released by authorities, but The Tuscaloosa News reported that he was a student at Englewood Elementary School, part of the Tuscaloosa County School System.

Dailey said the siblings and other family friends had spent the day on land the family leases for hunting.  He also said the boy left the group and took his rifle into the shooting house, located on County Road 33.

According to Dailey, investigators believe the boy died from a gunshot to the head and everything indicates it was an accident.

“It appears to be a tragic accident,” Dailey said. “It was in an area where you can only ride a four-wheeler on the road.”

Dailey said the Dallas County Sheriff’s Office (DCSO) and the Alabama Department of Fish and Wildlife are investigating.
