The Dallas County Commission had its first meeting with Dallas County Probate Judge and chairman Jimmy Nunn on Monday.

Improving the county roads was atop the agenda.

The commission approved county engineer George Jones’ recommendation to install 25 miles per hour speed limit signs on Deep Woods Road, which Jones said is a blind curve.

Commissioner Roy Moore said he had another alternative in case the speed limit signs aren’t effective.

“We’ve discussed this on several different occasions,” Moore said. “If the speed limit signs don’t work, in my opinion, we should put up a three-way stop sign.”

The Commission approved the claim of Hawatha McGhee to pay for her car repairs after it was damaged on a bad road that’s one-way at County Road 189.

Commissioner Valerie Reubin and Moore both acknowledged the roads need repairing. Nunn said last week fixing the roads is one of his priorities.

“We’ve got some bad roads in our county,” Reubin said. “We have pot holes on dirt roads. We’ve got to do something.”

The Commission approved the bid of Hancock-Whitney Bank to finance the county’s new dump trucks.

The Commission approved Nunn’s appointment to have former probate judge Kim Ballard replace Johnny Jones, also a former probate judge, for a six-year term on the Craig Airport Authority Board.

As the meeting closed, Nunn praised the Commission and county department heads for helping him during the first few days of office.

“I thank the commissioners and the support staff for making my transition easier,” Nunn said. “We have great department heads. Everybody has been great.”

The next Commission meeting will be held on Jan. 28 at 4 p.m. in the county courthouse.
