Quarterback Jeremy Lee played a big role in Morgan Academy having its football season in a decade.
Lee is The Selma Times-Journal’s prep football player of the year. Lee completed 119 of 195 passes for 2,007 yards for 18 touchdowns and only four interceptions. As punter, he averaged 40 yards a punt.
The junior said he was surprised to land the coveted role as the top prep football player in Dallas County. The Senators went 9-3, their best season since 2005.
“I didn’t expect it,” Lee said. “All I wanted to do this season was get myself used to being at Morgan Academy.”
Lee transferred from Meadowview Christian School (MCS) over the summer, focusing on the Senators’ baseball and football teams.
“When I came to Morgan Academy, I was nervous,” Lee said. “I had no clue. I knew people at Morgan Academy.”
Morgan Academy football coach Josh Thacker said Lee had to work his way into the Senators’ starting lineup.
“I’m very loyal to my players,” Thacker said. “When Jeremy got here, he had to earn a spot.”
Not only did Lee eventually earn the starting signal-caller nod, he impressed Thacker by devoting himself playing two sports.
“Jeremy pulled double duty with baseball and football,” Thacker said. “He balanced both very well and I’m proud of him for it.”
If Lee had to choose between baseball and football, he said it’d be baseball.
Lee said he’s looking forward to playing on a talent-laden Senators squad that has three Auburn signees: infielders David Ducote, Gunnar Henderson and catcher Brayton Brown. The Senators should contend for a state baseball title.
“Baseball is my favorite sport,” Lee said. “I can play anywhere in the infield. I don’t see how we don’t win a state baseball championship.”
The 5-foot-9 Lee will have an opportunity to play both sports on the collegiate level. Alabama and Auburn are interested in him for baseball. Troy, South Alabama, UAB, West Alabama and North Alabama have expressed interest in football.
“Jeremy is a highly sought after baseball recruit,” Thacker said. “After his junior year football showing, multiple colleges have shown interest in his football abilities.”
