State Christmas tree lighting Friday night in Montgomery

Gov. Kay Ivey will light the state’s Christmas tree Friday on the steps of the State Capitol in Montgomery.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. with musical performances from the Booker T. Washington Magnet High School Choir and the 151st Army Band of the Alabama National Guard.

The theme for this year’s event is “Every Light A Prayer for Peace.” There are approximately 35,000 LED lights on the tree and 100 ornaments, including 67 stars to represent each county in the state.

The state Christmas tree was donated by Ray Allen and his wife from Bullock County.

Joining Ivey at this year’s event will be Garden Clubs of Alabama Event Chair Suzy Shepherd, Garden Clubs of Alabama President Tricia Mitchell, Rev. Rob West of Clanton and Maj. Gen. Mike Rothstein, Vice Commander of Air University at Maxwell Air Force Base.

The tree will stand atop the steps leading to the main entrance of the State Capitol at 600 Dexter Avenue in Montgomery.
