Two Selma residents were sentenced in U.S. Federal Court last week.
Anthony Rashad Brown was sentenced on Nov. 30 to serve 70 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release for the illegal possession of a firearm.
Misty Danielle Combs Bailey was sentenced to five years of probation after being convicted of obtaining controlled substances by fraud.
Selma Police Department (SPD) detectives stopped Brown for a traffic infraction on Oct. 3, 2017.
After the officers smelled marijuana in the vehicle, they searched the vehicle and found a loaded .40-caliber, Ruger, P94 firearm under the driver side seat, which appeared stolen. Officers also found approximately 70 pills. Tests at the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences determined the pills as methamphetamine, and approximately 15 grams of marijuana in the center console of the vehicle.
Brown was already on federal probation for the felony offense of Possession with Intent to distribute marijuana in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Alabama. The prior federal conviction occurred on May 20, 2014.
The case was investigated by the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the SPD. The case was prosecuted by Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Force (OCDEFT) Lead Attorney, Assistant United States Attorney George F. May and Assistant United States Attorney Lawrence J. Bullard for the United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of Alabama.
A SPD investigation found that Bailey either forged, or caused to be forged 10 prescriptions made out to her as a patient of a Selma area dentist and obtained quantities of hydrocodone and oxycodone during a week in February. Bailey, 35, had obtained approximately 125 hydrocodone tablets and approximately 80 oxycodone tablet in that span. The SPD brought the case over to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
