Changes in the school system – Board vote could close two schools

It has been months in the planning stages, but on Wednesday, Selma City School Superintendent Dr. Avis Williams presented what her recommendation would be to the board in school consolidation.

The possible closure of Byrd and Cedar Park would mean drastic changes for the school system, but Williams believes it is all in the best interest of the system.

Enrollment is down, and with kids leaving the school system, it is harder for the system to maintain the full use of the facilities.

Enrollment has declined each year for the past few years, and there is no denying that this is a trend that has started with students leaving Selma altogether with their families.

Yet Williams remains optimistic that things will get better.

There’s no better way to look at this situation than with a positive attitude.

Williams told board members at their Wednesday work session that she believes in the people that work in this school system to be the best they can.

She has a vision for this system, to turn this system around, and while it involves changes, it should not be something that is feared.

It is all up to the school board now as they will have a first read vote very soon on how the system will address this problem of underutilized facilities and the decrease of student enrollment.

There are many players in this situation that all have the best interest of the system in their hearts. Let’s hope they can come together to figure out how to fix these problems and to give our students the best environment they can.
