The Selma High School Saints claimed a 68-39 victory over the Keith High School Bears Friday night, though no single player stood out as both teams spread the ball around throughout the game.
“I think they stepped up and played with a lot of intensity,” said Saints coach Ronald Lane. “Keith is well coached. To beat a team like Keith is big.”
The Saints began dominating in the first half as Tra’Veon Rogers had 10 points and Marqwavis Davis added nine.
Keith’s Victor Millhouse put up a respectable eight before the half, but the Bears trailed 31-18 at halftime.
Nether saw much action in the second half as Selma went to its reserves. Davis finished with 15 points, Rogers had 14 and Ty Garner scored 11.
Milhouse and Arayvion Jones each put up 10 for the Bears, Kendarius Perry had nine.
Lane was happy with Selma’s performance, but said the Bears will be working on the basics – sinking free throws, grabbing rebounds and playing harder defense – before Tuesday’s game against Francis Marion.
“Things like that will turn a ballgame your way,” Lane said.
Selma girls 57, Keith 22: Rodreckia Parker scored 18 points, Tasharri Grimes added 16.
After the half, Parker and Grimes each put up another six, bringing their totals to 18 and 16 respectively on the night.
“We’ve had a somewhat down season,” said Lady Saints coach Anthony Harris. “Tonight we played a little better than we did Tuesday.”
Harris noted the struggles his team has faced this season and lamented the number of turnovers that were allowed in Friday night’s game.
“We played pretty decent ball tonight,” Harris said. “We’re still trying to put this puzzle together but we’re missing a few pieces. We’ll accept what we can get though.”
