Tyshawn Garner scored 16 points as Selma High defeated Keith High 64-55 on Friday night at the Bears Den in Orrville.
Garner was the only double-figure scorer for the Saints, who improved to 2-0. It was the Bears’ season opener.
“We had to come out and play hard to get the win,” Garner said. “We had a good day of practice on Thursday.”
Selma jumped out to a 13-5 lead as MJ Harris and D’Javian Manzie each scored five of their eight points in the game’s first five minutes.
The Bears, however, closed the first quarter with a 9-1 run to get within 16-14 as Kendarius Perry scored nine of his 17 points.
Keith went cold in the second quarter, missing two of 10 shots. But Selma couldn’t pull away and only took a 28-22 halftime lead.
The Bears went scoreless for the first two minutes of the second half, but only trailed 41-36 after three quarters. Tra’Veon Rogers had five of his eight points for the Saints.
Selma High pulled away in the fourth quarter as the Saints’ defense contested Keith’s offense. Johnny Smith had eight points and 12 rebounds for the Saints.
Arayvion Jones scored a game-high 20 points for the Bears (0-1).
“As usual, it was a tough game,” Saints coach Ronald Lane said. “Keith and Selma High bring out the best in each other. Keith has a lot of championship tradition and a lot of pride in its basketball program.”
Selma High girls 66, Keith 16: Aaliyah Hatcher scored 21 points and grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the Lady Saints (2-0). Ta’Sharri Grimes added 17 points and Rodericka Parker finished with 15 points as the Lady Saints led 34-12 at halftime.
