Selma High sweeps Ellwood Christian to open season

Tra’Veon Rogers’ had 15 points on five three-pointers as Selma High edged Ellwood Christian Academy (ECA) 56-53 on Tuesday night.

Marqwavis Davis followed with 11 points, 3 steals, and 3 assists for the Saints (1-0).

Johnny Smith came off the bench to chip in with 8 points and grabbed 7 rebounds.

Selma coach Ronald Lane was pleased with the Saints’ season-opener.

“The game had a lot of energy with a good crowd, it was a great atmosphere for high school basketball,” Lane said.

Lane, however, said there’s some things the Saints can improve upon.

“Our inexperience showed from our shot selection to a lack of grabbing rebounds,” Lane said. “But we were able to pull out the win.”

Selma High girls 77, ECA 17: The Lady Saints had five players in double figures, cruising to an easy win.

Aaliyah Hatcher and Ta’Sharri Grimes each led the Lady Saints with 15 points.Takeirra Chappell added 12 points. Rodreckia Parker finished with 11 and Alexis Walker scored 10.

“We got a chance to play everybody,” Selma girls coach Anthony Harris said. “We were able to see some of our younger players.”

Both teams are on the road Friday night. Selma High travels to Keith; ECA visits Southside.
