Alabama Governor candidate makes one final pitch

Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox made one last pitch in his bid to become Alabama’s next Governor.
Maddox, D-AL, spoke at a Get Out the Vote (GOTV) rally Sunday at the Edmund Pettus Bridge. He faces Incumbent Governor Kay Ivey, R-AL, in Tuesday’s election and said Dallas County holds the key to him winning.
“I need your help for the fight to health care, education and equal rights,” Maddox told the audience. “I was reminded Sunday how important Selma is to this state. This election is important to the state of Alabama and it’s important to the city of Selma.”
Rep. Terri Sewell, D-AL, appeared at the rally in support of Maddox. Sewell is a Selma native and represents the 7th Congressional District. She said Maddox is the right candidate to take care of state residents.
“We need someone who will help us deliver on healthcare, make sure we have quality of life and decent wages,” Sewell said.
Maddox, 45, continued to pitch his platform of establishing a state lottery, improving job wages, the state’s low rankings in education and Medicaid expansion. He is also proposing to create one to fund college scholarships and a pre-kindergarten program.
“It is senseless Alabama doesn’t have a lottery,” Maddox said. “The state’s health care infrastructure for all Alabamians is crumbling with the closure of rural hospitals, because we didn’t expand Medicaid.”
Maddox expressed disappointment that Gov. Ivey refused to have a debate during the campaign, but he overcame it with his statewide bus tour. He had 70 stops across the state in a six-month stretch.
“Dallas County and Selma residents deserved to see a debate between me and Gov. Ivey,” Maddox said. “They haven’t received the leadership they needed from the state. We worked extremely hard on the campaign reaching out to the different communities.”
In Maddox’s closing words, he challenged the local residents to come through on Election Day.
“In life, there are moments of opportunity,” Maddox said. “Either we seize the opportunity or we do nothing. If you fight for me Tuesday, I’ll fight for you the next four years as Governor. It’s within our reach. This is our moment.”
