Sgt. Roy Nix is retiring from the Selma Police Department (SPD) after 37 years of service.
On Friday, the SPD threw a Halloween-styled retirement party for Nix, who began working at the SPD in 1981.
“I can finally relax and don’t have to worry about stuff,” Nix said. “It’s been good.”
Nix, who turns 66 on Tuesday, said he has fond memories working with the SPD. His last day will be Monday.
“My greatest memories are working with the great officers, from the Chief all the way down,” Nix said. “My wife, Tammy said, I love the SPD more than I love her.”
Another highlight of Nix’s career was training several officers who eventually outranked him, including Lt. Evelyn Ghant.
“I helped trained a lot of officers in the SPD,” Nix said. “A lot of them moved up above me in rank. I trained Ghant on riding a motorcycle. She was one of the first female officers around riding a motorcycle in a long time.”
Nix said he worked under eight different Chiefs, the last three being William Riley, John Brock and Spencer Collier.
Tammy Nix, who was present at the gathering, cracked jokes about having her husband home full time. They have two children, Roy Jr. and Amy, along with four grandchildren.
“If I get tired of him, I may send him out on some errands,” Tammy Nix said.
Before coming to the SPD, Nix worked six years with the Montgomery Police Department from 1974-1980.
