SABRA Sanctuary held a candlelight vigil on Thursday night to remember victims and survivors of domestic violence.
“This is pretty good turnout considering the weather,” said Renee Callen the executive director of SABRA. “I’ve been here one year, and SABRA serves six counties, Marengo, Greene, Sumter, Perry, Wilcox and Dallas so we are really reaching out to other counties and making presentations and a difference in different places.
We are about to renovate this whole building,” she said. “We have a safe haven in Selma that everyone would be proud of it is a cottage type house has washer and dryer and durable toys. It has an 8-foot fence, a playground and others. It is like a home setting.”
Callen said it is not just women who experience domestic violence
“This is an awesome organization,” said District Judge Bob Armstrong. “This is a great resource for our community. We support them 110 percent.”
A survivor shared their story about getting out of their situation with the help of SABRA.
Circuit Clerk Lynnethia Robinson performed a song, and then everyone held a moment of silence holding candles to remember survivors and victims.
