A body of an unidentified black male was found on Matthew Lane off of Alabama Highway 14 outside the Selma City limits on Friday night, according to Selma Police Department (SPD) Chief Spencer Collier.

Collier said investigators and the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) responded to the scene.

The body was found at 3:30 p.m., according to Collier.

Collier said the body was transported to the Department of Forensic Science and any identification will be withheld until an autopsy is performed.

Collier said the department is confident this body is a result of a homicide.

As of press time, the identity of the victim was not announced.

“This morning (Monday), I requested the SBI to take the lead on the investigation,” said Collier. “They have adopted the case. Selma PD’s role will be to facilitate any assistance that SBI requests. I made the request based on undisclosed internal reasons.”
