A Selma man was shot and killed Monday trying to protect others at an apartment complex in Birmingham.
The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office on Tuesday identified Tarius Richardson, 28, as the victim in a Monday shooting at an eastern Jefferson County apartment complex.
His mother, Cassie Richardson, told news outlets “Tarius was a good son, beloved brother, uncle and friend who loved his family dearly. He was not married, had no children and was truly his mother’s baby.”
Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to the complex before noon in the 2100 block of Whetstone Court on a gunfire report, according to Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office Chief Deputy Randy Christian.
Christian said deputies found Tarius suffering from gunshot wounds.
A woman who had been with Richardson was also wounded. She suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
Cassie said Tarius was trying to break up an argument when the shooting happened.
A suspect is in custody.
This death marks the 131st homicide in all of Jefferson County this year.
