The annual Old Cahawba Ghost Tours attracted guests from all over on Saturday.
I think it was a great success,” said assistant site director Jonathan Matthews. “We were scared about the rain coming in, but the weather turned out great. I think the clouds went away those last two tours and the moonlight just really illuminated Oak Street.
I’d call it a sell out,” said Matthews. “Every wagon had 28 or 29 folks. The Tally-Ho food truck was a success too, the owners said they stayed busy. It was a great way to highlight the history and the ghost stories at Old Cahawba.”
The tour consisted of a wagon ride to two of Old Cahawba’s sites, the New Cemetery and the site of the remnants of slave quarters.
“We did three or four stories in the cemetery, we did a few in the wagon on the trails and at the slave quarters is where they get to enter the building,” said Matthews. “That also is where the paranormal investigations occur.”
Inside the slave quarters, the tour group was divided into two teams. One went upstairs and another remained downstairs.
In the upstairs rooms, a child’s ball was set in the center of two chalk circles. The paranormal investigators said the test was to see how far a spirit moved the ball from the center of the circles.
Downstairs, the team used infrared cameras to see the change in temperature claiming to see where spirits were in the room.
Site Director Linda Derry said the tour provided the perfect balance of history and paranormal investigations.
“What I like about this event is that we found out about these people in the Library of Congress,” she said. “I think this how people want to consume their history now. We are public historians, and that is what we’re trying to do is bring the past alive in the future and if you think about it, that is what a ghost is just the past alive in the future.”
