Selma City Councilwoman Angela Benjamin will be hosting a Stop the Gun Violence Community gathering Saturday afternoon on the corner of First Avenue and Green Street.

The event will start at noon with the community door knocking in that area, which is part of Benjamin’s Ward 4 District.

The rally will begin at 2 p.m. with several things lined up: candle lighting in remembrance, a signing of a memory banner, a prayer with call to lay down the arms and propose a friendlier neighborhood promise. A person will also speak based on his experience of violence.

Benjamin has invited pastors, teachers and youth in the entire Queen City to come together and unite against gun violence.

“Facilitating community gatherings against violence is one way to remember victims and address violent behavior at the same time. It is my hope that families are lifted and minds are changed.”

Benjamin said it’s important to keep the youth on the right path.

“You can tell a lot about a community based on its investments,” Benjamin said. “Our children are our future. We must take care of them today. Balance is a key component. We must invest in their spiritual life, their education and violent behavior at the same time.”

If anyone wants to add a name of their loved ones to the calling of names, call either (334) 874-1234 or (334) 349-5389 or email councilsecretary@selma-al.gov.

A bouncy house will be available for the kids. Parking will also be available at a vacant lot on Lawrence Street. Refreshments will be served.

Benjamin anticipates a strong showing from Queen City residents.

“Because of the value we should be placing on human life, it is my expectation that Selma will show up to say: I care. What can I do to help?” Benjamin said.
