Meadowview Christian School (MCS) held a flag retirement ceremony at its football stadium on Friday morning.
The American Legion presented MCS with a new flag at the football stadium before its student body and teachers.
Jesse Sanchez, District Commander of the American Legion’s 31st District and three Boy Scouts of America members- Matt Wells, Sawyer Wells and Hunter Nichols- participated in the 20-minute ceremony.
The three Boy Scouts took down the old flag and presented it to Sanchez, who gave it to MCS Head Master and football coach Bob Taylor. The Boy Scouts sent the new flag up the flagpole.
After the ceremony, Sanchez addressed the crowd.
“Any good American glory deserves the proper respect,” Sanchez said. “The Boy Scouts graciously agreed to participate in this ceremony. Once a flag is tattered and old, it’s time to replace it.”
Matt Wells, a freshman and his younger brother, Sawyer, an eighth-grader, both said it was an honor to participate in the ceremony.
“The ceremony and flag is about respecting our soldiers and our country,” Matt Wells said.
“The flag is all about respect and never forgetting what our military men and women have done for us defending this country,” Sawyer Wells said.
Nichols, a sophomore, said the flag is about an American tradition.
“The ceremony is something that needed to be respectful to the people that’s fighting for our freedom,” Nichols said.
Taylor said the ceremony reminds him of family and patriotism.
“Coming from a family of veterans, there’s a lot of meaning behind the American Flag for me,” Taylor said.
