The Valley Grande City Council donated a $20,000 check to the Dallas County Sheriff’s Department at its council meeting on Monday at Valley Grande City Hall.
The check will help the sheriff’s office purchase tasers and body armor for the deputies. Dallas County Sherriff Harris Huffman Jr., sheriff-elect Mike Granthum and Lt. John Hatfield were at the 25-minute meeting.
The entire council was present at the meeting.
“Public safety is the number one priority in Valley Grande,” Valley Grande mayor Matt Dobbs said.
Granthum, who takes office in January, said the Dallas County Commission has funded the Sheriff’s office properly, but appreciates the Valley Grande City Council.
“Valley Grande is more than a partnership, it’s more like a relationship,” Granthum said. “I want to keep the relationship going like you have with Sheriff Huffman.”
Huffman, who retires in December, said he valued working with Valley Grande.
“I enjoyed working with people in Valley Grande,” Huffman said. “I appreciate what the city has done for the Sheriff’s office. A lot of hard working people live in Valley Grande. I live here. Valley Grande is fixing to hit the high road.”
Selma-Dallas County Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Sheryl Smedley was the other part of the council’s new business. Smedley handed the council a portfolio about the city’s history, demographics, median income and population.
Valley Grande city officials will present a proclamation at the Bicentennial celebration of Dallas County on Saturday at Old Cahawba.
The next Valley Grande city council meeting will be held on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m. at Valley Grande City Hall.
