Selma City Councilwoman Jannie Thomas is hosting a Stop the Gun Violence event on Saturday afternoon at Selma University.
The event will start at noon with the theme, “Taking back our communities.” It is in Thomas’ Ward 7 District.
Several shootings have occurred in Thomas’ Ward over the summer and she wants it to stop. She often calls Selma Police Spencer Collier about having more officers in her Ward.
“We’ve decided to take back our Ward,” Thomas said. “The kids are worried about the violence. We have children and elderly living in my Ward. We don’t want to get any more people killed in our ward.”
Thomas said gun violence will be the topic for the event.
“We’re bringing the families out to talk about gun violence,” Thomas said. “Having a gun isn’t the way to be. Their lives are taken away because of guns.”
Thomas has invited the entire Queen City to come together and unite against gun violence at Selma University.
“This isn’t just about Ward 7, it’s about the whole community of Selma,” Thomas said.
