Time is running out – City Council, Mayor need a financial plan

The time is creeping closer to have a fiscal year budget plan in order for the upcoming year, and yet all the Selma City Council and Selma Mayor Darrio Melton can seem to do is continue fights that hinder both sides from achieving this goal.

On Tuesday, Melton went as far as to fire Temekia Sykes, the administrative assistant for the Selma City Council.

This firing allegedly was done allegedly in retaliation and spite that the mayor’s $22 million proposed budget was rejected by the council including all of the proposed taxes, which even Dallas County Probate Judge Kim Ballard said is a bad idea to pass these proposed taxes.

Council members, and mayor, please understand that time is running out.

Time is running out quick.

Do we really want to repeat ourselves working off a 2016-2017 budget?

What does this lack of direction and financial certainty look like to people who view our society from the outside?

Imagine how this situation looks to possible new businesses that could bring their money and industry to this city and the surrounding areas.

Would you want to bring your business knowing that our government can’t even pass a budget?

We couldn’t blame them if they didn’t.

It is the job of the council and Melton to come up with a budget that will benefit the city.

We put you all into your respective offices to make the decisions for us.

If you all cannot make these financial decisions for us, then maybe it is time we find people that can.
