Valley Grande continued to inquire about buying a new fence at its council meeting on Monday at Valley Grande City Hall.

Present at the 34-minute meeting were Mayor Matt Dobbs, Ronald Sawyer, Lamar Morgan, Tammy Troha, Jimmy Johnson and City Clerk Janet Frazier. Tim White was absent.

J.M. Morrow of Morrow Ornamental Iron presented the city council two options for fences at Valley Grande City Park and Sports Complex.

Fencing option one, which includes the gate option, chain link drive gate and drive gate automation, would cost over $44,000.  It is a f4-inch tall welded steel fence and residential grade fencing.

Fencing option two, which includes the gate option, chain link drive gate and drive gate automation, would cost over $57,000. The difference in price is its welded steel fencing has an Ameristar Montage Plus Classic 3 Rail commercial grade.

It would cost an additional $10,200 for either option if Valley Grande officials opted for 5-inch tall by 20-foot square brick columns.

“We can build a very inexpensive fence,” Morrow said. “Maintenance will be needed soon after it’s built.”

At the last council meeting on Aug. 6, Troha received a $33,000 estimate for a new fence.

Dobbs said safety is the primary concern.

“The general objective is to be able to control people coming in and out, running through doing donuts,” Dobbs said.  “We want it to look as nice as possible, but we’re looking at what we want to spend.”

City officials, however, must apply with county specifications, especially for the road and runway.

Dobbs said the fencing dilemma will be tabled for now and discuss it at a later date.

“We have a lot of stuff to think about,” Dobbs said. “Morrow brought up stuff I didn’t even think about.”

The next Valley Grande meeting will be on Tuesday, Sept. 4 at 6 p.m. The meeting is moved back a day because of Labor Day.
