Installation of new lights in the eight different Wards led the Selma City Council meeting on Tuesday at City Hall.

Councilwoman Angela Benjamin presided over the meeting in place of Council President Corey Bowie.

The other Council members present were Councilmen Sam Randolph, John Leashore, Michael Johnson and Carl Bowline and Councilwomen Miah Jackson, Jannie Thomas and Susan Youngblood.

The City Council decided to wait until hearing from Alabama Power Company before making a decision.

Thomas said residents in her district have waited 19 months for new lights.

“It’s been long overdue for my constituents,” Thomas said. “It’s hard for the people to see the procedure we go through.”

Benjamin suggested the Council Lighting budget to determine the cost and have a meeting with City Treasurer Ronita Wade.

Thomas suggested a new policy for the use of city vehicles, especially personal use, driving outside the city jurisdiction and gas mileage. She said the Council needs to know who uses the vehicles.

“We need a new policy in place, not just for the Selma Police Department, it should be for all city employees,” Thomas said. “The current policy doesn’t explain who uses the city vehicles.”

At last week’s City Council Work Session, Bowie suggested drafting a letter to City Attorney and Dallas County Probate Judge-elect Jimmy Nunn and he’d give it to Selma Mayor Darrio Melton.

The City Council also debated on whether or not to spend $4,200 on a Labor Day program for fireworks and a car show. It will be discussed at a later date.

“We need to give something back to the community,” Randolph said.

Selma High track star Jamerious Rivers received his trophy for winning the second straight Bible Bowl at the Youth Conference last month.

The next City Council meeting will be held on Aug. 28 at 5 p.m. at City Hall.
