Selma native McKenzie Strother recently completed an internship with Sen. Richard Shelby, R-AL.

Strother was a member of the Congressional Internship Program that provides students with “a unique opportunity to experience the day-to-day workings of Capitol Hill,” according to Shelby.

“First-hand involvement in our nation’s legislative process gives students a realistic perspective of various topics taught in the classroom. I have no doubt that these students have bright futures ahead of them and am grateful for their hard work and assistance to my Washington office.”

Strother, who is in her last semester at Auburn, and is expected to graduate this December, is majoring in hospitality management and minoring in business. She has been involved in Impact, AU Involve and AU Class Checking.

She said the internship allowed her to travel to Washington D.C., and see the events that are planned and implemented in and around Capitol Hill.

“Being on the Hill, there were always events and receptions happening after work hours, so that was really cool to see,” said Strother. “I know now that I want to be in a fast-paced environment. I could definitely see myself going back to D.C. after being there for a month. I know I would love to be in a place like that.”

Strother said her aunt recommended applying for the internship.

“My aunt was a senior in college, and she did the same internship,” Strother said. “I thought I would give it a try, and it was quite an experience and I enjoyed it.”

Strother moved to D.C. in July and stayed until Aug. 3.

The internship included front desk help, touring the capital and archiving documents of Shelby’s past legislation.

“His team was really good about letting us see everything,” she said. “There was always something going on. It is always a fast-paced environment.

“My time spent in Senator Shelby’s office is something I will always cherish,” Strother said. “I feel grateful for the knowledge I have gained, the places I have seen and the people I have met. I am so thankful for the opportunity to have interned in his office and to have been around such a hardworking and hospitable staff. Interning here has been an honor, and I cannot thank the Senator and his team enough for giving me this experience.”

The program is open to college students who exhibit an interest in government and public service.
