The numbers are doubled in Selma compared to the rest of the nation in opioid abuse and opioid prescriptions.
On Tuesday, the Drug Free Communities of Dallas County (DFC) was awarded $150,000 in grant money to help fight this problem. This program is the only program in the state that was awarded this grant award.

We commend the group for scoring in the 95 percentile on their application, and we know that the work done to get this money was in full effort from everyone involved.

While the statistics that brought us a great deal closer to getting this money are not something to be proud of, the fact that we now have this money in our community to help fix our problems is exciting.

It seems that we are attacked from all sides when it comes to making Selma better. The “Saving Selma Lives” group is taking a stand against the gang and shooting violence that has kept the town in fear, and programs like the DFC is working to eradicate the drug problems that plague youth as young as 12 years old.

It may seem overwhelming, but we encourage everyone involved in both of these groups to keep fighting to make this place better. Your examples will be one for those of years to come, and your efforts one day will not be in vain.
