Annual Senior Prom to be held on Friday night

The City of Selma and the Edmundite Missions are partnering once again for the third annual Senior Citizens Prom. Ward 5 City Councilman and event organizer Samuel Randolph said the event is a way for the city of Selma to show the seniors how much they are cared for and appreciated.

“I came up with the idea because after speaking with some senior citizens a lot of them said there is nothing to do in Selma for senior citizens,” Randolph said. “A lot of them said to me, ‘We didn’t have prom’ or ‘there wasn’t a prom in my day.’”

Randolph said after those conversations he knew he had to organize a prom for the seniors.

The prom will be on Friday, July 27 from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the George P. Evans Building.

This year’s theme is “Over the Rainbow.” The seniors need to bring their own dancing shoes because they will be playing hits from the 30’s to the 70’s. Food also will be provided and, in true prom fashion, a king and queen will be crowned at the end of the night.

“It’ll be just like a high school prom,” Randolph said.

According to Randolph, events like this offer the seniors a chance to get out more and enjoy new things.

“Some seniors are afraid to get out into the community, and this is a safe environment for them to meet other senior citizens and possibly establish a friendship,” Randolph said. “It’s a chance for them to go out into the community and enjoy themselves.”
