Revitalization for Selma highlighted the Selma City Council work session on Thursday at City Hall.

Ollie Davison, chief of staff for Selma Mayor Darrio Melton, presented the council members the proposal to improve the city.

The project began in 2011, and Davison sought Council approval to make the Sept. 19 deadline to submit the application. The project’s total cost is $75,000, but the Housing Authority will pay $50,000. The remaining $25,000 comes from the city as an administration fee and counts toward the 2018 budget.

“We’ve gotten great feedback,” Davison said. “We need to come with the correct information.”

Davison said only five grants will be handed out by the U.S. Housing and Urban Development. HUD helps communities improve the quality of housing, life and education.

Present at the work session were council president Corey Bowie, councilmen Carl Bowline, Michael Johnson and John Leashore, Councilwomen Miah Jackson, Jannie Thomas, Susan Youngblood and Angela Benjamin. Sam Randolph wasn’t present.

City attorney Jimmy Nunn received a standing ovation for his victory over Nicholas Switzer to become the next Dallas County Probate Judge. He doesn’t replace Kim Ballard until January.

Weed abatement, part of the city’s code ordinance, was also discussed. If a resident gets warned by the city to cut grass and refuses, a letter is sent to them by the city. If the issue continues and the city cuts the grass, the resident gets fined and a lien gets placed on their property.

“We’re not finishing the process,” Nunn said.

Bowie put the weed abatement on the consent agenda.

The Council also continued to discussions with treasurer Ronita Wade about next year’s budget. Bowie and Wade plan to meet with Melton soon. The Fiscal year ends Sept. 30 and the 2019 year begins on Oct. 1.

The regular City Council meeting will be 5 p.m. Tuesday.
