A new Dallas County Probate Judge will be elected Tuesday night.

Jimmy Nunn and Nick Switzer are in a run-off election to become the next Probate Judge.  It’s the only local race on the Democratic ballot.

Polls will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

Both candidates continued to campaign over the weekend and appeared at the Rise In Service United in Partnership (RISE UP) event on Saturday.  They assisted with the trash cleanup in Ward 3 headed by Selma City Councilwoman Miah Jackson.

Nunn, Selma’s city attorney, slogan is “There’s Nunn like Jimmy.” Switzer, a senior Microbiologist at Alabama Department of Public Health, campaign slogan is “The Smart Choice.”

Nunn and Switzer each stated their case for becoming the successor to long-time Probate Judge Kim Ballard. Reducing crime, improving the Dallas County Sherriff’s Department and cleaning up trash are high priorities for both.

“I have the integrity, temperament, diligence and professional competence to be our next probate judge,” Nunn said. “If you want something, you have to work hard at it.”

Switzer believes he has the leadership qualities.

“Everyone in Dallas County is waiting for a leader to come in and get to work, I’m ready to take the opportunity,” Switzer said.

Nunn and Switzer were both disappointed that the other’s campaign signs were stolen over the last several weeks, but they remained focused on the bigger picture.

“I always pressed forward and did not bring it to the light,” Nunn said.

“We regret that this has happened, but we’re focused on the campaign,” Switzer said. “That’s all we can do about it.”

If elected, Nunn and Switzer both said they plan to continue Ballard’s open-door policy for citizens to air out their complaints.

The Selma-Dallas Panhellenic Council and the Links, Inc. have teamed up for the “Get out the Vote Campaign.”  They will give free rides for registered voters to reach their respective voting areas. Anyone needing a ride to the poll, should call (334)-349-3915.

Mailed absentee ballots must be postmarked no later than at noon Tuesday. Hand-deliveries also must be made no later than noon.
