Absentee Voting for the July 17 Runoff Election is now open at the Dallas County Courthouse.

Jimmy Nunn and Nicholas Switzer are in a runoff to replace Kim Ballard as Probate Judge. Nunn finished first with 3,983 votes, followed by Switzer, who received 3,753 votes at the June 5 Primary Election. 

The voting goes from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and ends at 4:30 p.m. July 12. Alabama state law sets the voting deadline to apply five days before the election takes place.

Absentee voters can vote one or two ways. They can fill out an application in Room 219 of the Dallas County Courthouse, but must have photo identification. They can also get an application online at Alabamavotes.gov or the Vote for Alabama App, or deliver it in person to the office of absentee election manager, Ethleen Nettles.

If mailed, they must be postmarked no later than at noon July 17, the day of run-off election. Hand-deliveries must be made no later than noon on July 17. Absentee voters must be registered for their votes to count.

Nettles said bringing in another person’s ballot is prohibited.

“We can’t accept applications for someone else,” Nettles said. “The application has to be their own.”

Here are the requirements for absentee voting:

-A person is either ill or has a physical disability that prevents them from making a trip to the polling place.

-A registered Alabama voter temporarily living outside Dallas county (military, employed outside the U.S., a college student, or a spouse or child of a person).

-An appointed election officer or poll watcher at a polling place other than your regular polling place.

-Working a required shift – 10 hours or more – that coincides with polling hours.

Local residents have only two days next week to fill out absentee ballots because the Dallas County Courthouse will be closed from July 4 through July 6 because of the Fourth of July holiday.
