Cameras dominated the 19-minute Valley Grande City Council Meeting on Monday at City Hall.

Among the places Valley Grande will install cameras are City Hall, the walking trail and the baseball and softball fields.

The City Council estimates it will cost $33,000 to install cameras in the city.

Public Safety director Boyd Pugh, building inspector Sam Smitherman, Zoning, annexation and sewer system director Tim White, Beautification and education officer Ronald Sawyer and Building and community development officer Jimmy Johnson all attended the council meeting.

Parks and Recreation officer Tammy Troha wasn’t present.

“To me, public safety in Valley Grande is the most important issue in the city for me,” Valley Grande mayor Matt Dobbs said. “We’ve talked to the Dallas County Sherriff’s office about the best option for cameras.”

Dobbs said a reason for the installation of cameras is because city residents often contact the law enforcement for incidents in town.

“People are out on the walking trail at 5 a.m. in the morning and there’s people there that are drunk or playing loud music,” Dobbs said. “They call the Dallas County Sherriff’s office. The same thing goes on at our ball fields.”

The other topic at the council meeting was removing the nitrate tower and duck weed from the pond. White discussed with the council getting a larger septic tank and look into the issue.

Johnson had no update about a city project. He lined up an Engineer and contractor and gave his attorney the contract to review, but hadn’t heard back.

Valley Grande will also look into repairing its softball and baseball fields. The recent rainstorms have washed out the fields.

The next city council meeting will be at 6 p.m. on July 2.
