The Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority chapter in Selma will start its Reading Is Fundamental fun day at 9 a.m. Monday morning in the Carl C. Morgan Convention Center.

Sister Yomi will be the storyteller, and will begin the eight-day event across the city.

The program is sponsored by the AKA’s Zeta Eta Omega Chapter, Women and Youth Services of Selma, in collaboration with mayor Darrio Melton, the Selma City Council and Dallas County Commissioners.

The national RIF donated over 300 books to the local RIF program. Books are available for kids ages 3 to 17.

At the various events, children will have an opportunity to meet the clowns and their favorite book characters, including, Clifford the Big Red Dog, Franklin the turtle, Curious George, the Black Frog and the Big Green Monster.   

“We are preparing to motivate children to read by delivering free books and literacy resources to those children and families who need them most,” RIF local coordinator Nancy Sewell said.

“We hope to inspire children to be lifelong readers through the power of choice. The seeds of inspiration in these books have motivated children to follow their dreams and achieve their potential.”

The AKA’s Zeta Eta Omega Chapter announced a RIF literacy program to 70 second graders at Southside Primary School on May 22.
