Thanks to a partnership between the Selma to Montgomery National Historic Trail and the City of Selma, the Riverfront Movie Nights In The Park will return once again for its second year.

Free movies will be shown every Friday at 8:30 p.m. during June at Selma’s Amphitheatre located near the intersection of Martin Luther King, Jr. Street and Water Avenue

Gates will open at 8 p.m.

The movies that are scheduled to show are:

Friday, June 1: “The Butler”

Friday, June 8: “Ruby Bridges”

Friday, June 15: “Freedom Song”

Friday, June 22: “Selma”

Each movie was chosen by the City of Selma to teach the history of Selma as well as the events that took place during the civil rights and voting rights era.

Attending families are free to bring food, drinks, chairs and blankets.

Hillary Conley, a staff member at the Selma Interpretive Center, thinks this is a great event and encourages families to come out and enjoy the free movies.

“I think it’s really exciting,” Conley said. “We would hope that a lot of people would come out because all of the films that we are showing are related to the 1965 voting rights movement. It’s a great way to have a relaxing night, have some fun and learn a little bit of history.”

“It [the Riverfront Movie Nights] provides a nice community and family-friendly atmosphere on Friday nights,” Conley said. “I think it’s important for the community to keep understanding and honoring their importance and voting rights movement, not just locally, but across the world. So, I think it’s a good event.”

The turn out for June’s first movie, “The Butler” had a fairly decent sized turn out with a couple of families coming in from out of town, according to Conley, however, she hopes that attendance increases.

In the event of inclement weather, movies will be shown at the Selma Interpretive Center located on 2 Broad Street.
