Ron Brewer and Gladys Brewer traveled a long way to attend the American Cancer Society Relay for Life Dallas County on Friday at the Selma Lions Fair Park.

The Brewers came all the way from Providence, Rhode Island. Ron’s wife, Gladys Brewer, is currently battling cervical cancer. She’s originally from Orville, and Ron Brewer is Vice-President of CC Security Services in Providence.

“My family introduced me to this event,” Gladys Brewer said. “This organization helped me emotionally. They stayed a week out in Rhode Island and helped me financially. They’re very supportive.”

Gloria Malon was among those cancer survivors who received a medal for overcoming the disease. She’s been in remission for 12 years.

“This organization keeps me encouraged and they let you know that people care,” Malon said. “With God’s help, I can beat it.”

Denise Johnson, who has been in remission of breast cancer for nine years, wanted to give back to the American Cancer Society.

“When I was going through cancer, they helped me, now it’s my turn to help them,” Johnson said.

Lynn Alexander saw the event as an opportunity to support her loved ones.

“This event gives me a chance to support my family and friends who have cancer,” Alexander said.

Bridgette Mills, Senior Community Development Manager of American Cancer Society for Dallas, Lowdnes, Marengo, Perry, Montgomery and Sumter Counties, enjoyed the testimony of several cancer survivors.

“We couldn’t survive without the community’s support and dedication,” Mills said. “The monies we raise go toward cancer treatment.”

Alvin Craig, Relay for Life event lead, was impressed with how the event united the Dallas County community.

“It meant the world to see this turnout,” Craig said. “Cancer affects all nationalities. That’s why you saw all nationalities here. We’re celebrating all cancer survivors, life and the pursuit of happiness.”

An estimated 400 attended the event, according to Mills. Thirteen relay teams raised money to help with cancer research and treatment. The teams included local hospitals, churches, greek organizations and businesses.

Last year, the teams helped Relay for Life Dallas County raise over $100,000. This year’s total amount wasn’t announced at press time.
