The time of year when Dallas County’s Farmers’ Market opens has finally arrived. Starting Saturday, June 2, the Farmers’ Market will begin selling a variety of produce to its customers.

Open from 6 a.m. to 2 p.m. every Saturday, Tuesday, and Thursday  at Bloch Park from June until November, an estimated 20 producers or more will be distributing their freshly grown produce.

These certified vendors have proven themselves to be proficient in their farming skills and have undergone an immense amount of training to further increase their ability.

The vendors have experience growing and caring for their produce, and can ensure that what they sell will be of high quality.

County Extension Coordinator Callie Nelson said the Farmers’ Market is great for both farmers and customers. She also shows concern about the high prominence of health issues in Dallas County.

“It is a really great opportunity,” Nelson said. “One thing we know is that Dallas County has a high obesity rate. We have a lot of health issues like hypertension, high blood pressure and diabetes. Eating more produce, that is, vegetables and fruits, really helps combat all of those issues.”

Despite not being a farmer herself, Nelson commonly visits the market, checks its progress in sales and solves issues that are present. She has also acquired knowledge on the effects fruits and vegetables have on the body, and how these healthy foods can deter health issues.

“Fruits and vegetables are low in calories; therefore, they can help you lose weight. They also help to lower your blood pressure and help control diabetes,” Nelson said.

She says that by coming to the market people are getting the best quality produce.

“It is right here. Grown in Dallas County. They’re getting the best quality produce.”

Nelson hopes for many people to come to the Farmers Market and purchase its locally grown foods.

“We want people to come out and make sure that by the end of the day that all of farmers’ produce is gone,” Nelson said. “We want people to really come out and support the Farmers’ Market. We’re looking forward to a really good year.”
