Paul M. Grist State Park is a Dallas County treasure

There is nothing quite like being at Paul M. Grist State Park on a wonderful spring afternoon. Coming down the hill and seeing the reflection of the trees on the lake will take your breath away.

It is truly a remarkable place, and people in Dallas County are lucky to have it. It wasn’t long ago when the state decided to close the doors due to funding cuts by the Alabama Legislature.

But the people of this county did not let that happen. Dallas County leased the park and operates it now. Due to the people who love the park expressing their concern for its closure, the gates were not shut for long.

This past Saturday is a great example of what this park means to this community.

Friends of Paul M. Grist State Park held the second annual Trade Day, and it didn’t disappoint. There were dozens of vendors selling arts and crafts, clothes, wooden toys, food and a little bit of everything. There were children running and playing and enjoying the old-fashioned games. There were people fishing in the lake. It was a sight to see.

If you didn’t go, you missed out, but there will be more opportunities. The friends group puts on several events each year to show off the park, whether it is the fall festival or a horse trail ride benefit.

We’re glad to see the park getting the support it needs to remain open, and we hope that support continues. The county and the friends group have done a tremendous job of keeping the park clean and everything maintained.

If you’re looking for something to do, load up the family in the car and take them to Grist.
