A Selma man was killed in Highland Home Sunday morning, according to Alabama State Troopers, after his vehicle struck a downed tree.

Reginald Bernard Howard, 52, was killed when the 1987 Chevrolet truck he was driving struck a tree in the road on Alabama Highway 97 near the 7-mile marker around 5:50 a.m. in Highland Home.

Howard was pronounced dead on the scene by Crenshaw County Coroner Ronnie Turner.

According to State Troopers, 46-year-old Tyrome Butler, who was a passenger in Howard’s truck, was injured during the single-vehicle accident.

Butler was transferred to Baptist South Hospital in Montgomery due to injuries sustained in the crash. The extent of his injuries is unclear.

The crash is still considered under investigation, but a preliminary investigation by Alabama State Troopers indicates severe weather as a factor in the crash.

A 26-year-old Elba man identified as Dillion Alexander Roberts was killed in the same spot minutes later, according to Alabama State Troopers.

The 2000 Ford Expedition he was driving struck a downed tree in the roadway.

He was also pronounced dead on the scene, and the cause of the crash is believed to be severe weather.
