Charles Wilbert Wood

Charles Wilbert Wood, age 91, went home to be with his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, Feb. 25, 2018.

He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Elizabeth McCrory Wood; his parents, John Leonard Wood and Ruby Dunaway Crowder; brother, Tommy Wood and sister, Barbara Barker Rushing.

Surviving are his children, Charles Wilbert (Teri) Wood, Jr. of Birmingham, Elizabeth Dianne (Casey) Capps of Montgomery, sister, Anne (Bob) Nierste of Kissimmee, Florida, brother-in-law, James (Geneva) McCrory, sister-in-law, Norma McCrory of Valley Grande, sister-in-law, Sue Chapman of Central, South Carolina, step-grandson, Justin (Angela) Anthony and many nieces and nephews.

The family would like to thank his loving longtime caregiver, Gracie Riddle, and caregivers, Barbara Garris, Maggie Lumpkin & Della Harrison for their extraordinary care. They would also like to thank Kindred Hospice for their loving support in his final days.

Charles was a WWII Veteran serving in the Navy branch.  He was a faithful member and deacon of Northside Baptist Church.  He spent the majority of his career in the grocery business, which included co-ownership in the Foodland Grocery Store in Selma and working with Gaston’s IGA Grocery in Selma. He was a long-time member of the Selma Civitan Club.

A celebration of his life will be held Thursday, March 1, 2018, at 11 a.m. at Selma Funeral Home Chapel with Dr. Kenny Hatcher and Bro. Ken Blake officiating.  Interment will be at New Live Oak Cemetery with Selma Funeral Home directing.  Visitation with be prior to the service from 10:30 a.m. to 11 a.m.

Pallbearers will be Justin Anthony, Gregg Chapman, Mark Chapman, Scott McCrory, Berry Vines, Jessie Nichols and Jack Smith.

Honorary Pallbearers will be the Northside Baptist Church Men’s Harmony Sunday School Class and the Brotherhood Prayer Breakfast Group.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to Northside Baptist Church, 2950 Citizens Parkway, Selma, AL 36701.
