The YMCA of Selma-Dallas County has opened signups for its new adult basketball league.

“This is a new program for the Selma-Dallas County YMCA,” program director Chase Morris said. “I just wanted to give an opportunity to the adults to play basketball. I know that basketball is huge here in Selma, so I wanted to expand off what’s popular in the community.”

The league will consist of two divisions. The Dreamers division will be for players ages 19-31, and the Legends division is for players ages 32 and older.

“I hope that we have at least four to six teams per division,” Morris said. “Hopefully, the word of mouth after this first go around will increase our numbers for the second go around.”

The price for members of the Y is $35 per person and $50 per person for non-members. The Y prefers participants sign-up as a team, but individuals are welcome to sign-up as well.

Individuals will be assigned to a team based on their age and available roster spots. Each team must have at least six members, but no more than 10 is allowed per team. The registration deadline is Thursday, Feb. 22.

Morris wanted to introduce this new program to the Selma Y to give the adults in the community a way to play basketball.

The Y does have a youth league, but the adult league is a new installment at the Selma Y.

There won’t be any organized practices like the youth league, but games will be played on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at the Y. The season will begin on Thursday, March 1.

“I didn’t want time to be an issue for why someone couldn’t make a game,” Morris said.

The success of this season will depend on how many people sign-up, pay and participate in the inaugural adult league season. Morris hopes that a good turnout will establish the league and allow it to become a fixture at the Y.

“My goal is to have two seasons for each year,” he said. “That’s the future goal. It will depend on how well we do this first go around, but my future goal is to have two seasons per year.”

This new program is primed to provide another way for the community to have fun, exercise and contribute to the local Y.

“I encourage anyone who still likes to play the game of basketball to come out and give this adult league a shot,” Morris said. “I know a bunch of people who have come up to me and said that they’re going to get a team together, so we’re looking forward to it.”
