Grades for the Selma City and Dallas County school systems were released Thursday by the Alabama Department of Education (ALSDE).

The Alabama State Report Card reports how each school system in the state is performing, as well as each individual school.

According to the department, the report card was designed so parents, teachers and people in the community can understand how their schools are performing.

The grades are based off of academic achievement, academic growth, graduation rate, college and career readiness, and chronic absenteeism.

The goals of the Alabama State Report Card are to provide information that is easy to understand and to show how a school is meeting its goals.

It was also designed to hold schools accountable for explaining their performance to the communities they serve.

Out of 137 school systems across the state, 76 percent of them received a grade of A, B or C. None of the school systems received an F.

The Selma City School System was given a grade of D. The Dallas County School System received a C grade. Grades are also given to each individual school with third through 12th grades.

Only one school in each system did not receive a grade, Byrd for Selma City and Southside Primary for Dallas County.

Of the 10 schools that received a grade for Selma City Schools, all but one had a grade of D and below. Meadowview Elementary received a C.

“There is no question that we must improve the quality of our state’s education system and I am committed to do so. We have dedicated teachers and students who work hard each day in the classroom. We must provide our teachers with the tools necessary to ensure our children are learning at the highest quality standards,” said Gov. Kay Ivey in response to the report cards.

“We must support our students with environments suitable for learning. I am committed to leading the effort to improve education in Alabama from Pre-K to the workforce.”

The report card was also designed to meet requirements set by federal and state laws. The Alabama Legislature requires an Alabama State Report Card, and Every Student Succeeds Act, a federal law, also requires an Alabama State Report Card.

Instead of having two separate report cards, the ALSDE designed one uniform report to cut down on any confusion.
