The Selma Art Guild is gearing up for their February events. This year they are bringing new and original events to the community.

Jo Pate, secretary of the Selma Art Guild, said they are extremely excited about the Black History Month art show. The show will be on Feb. 11 and will feature both local and non-local artists. There is no cost to entrants or to guests.

Pate said this year art students from Alabama State University will be participating in the Black History Month show to showcase their artwork.

“Part of our purpose is to expose the community to new artists and give them a platform so that they can become better known,” Pate said.

Pate also said all artwork will be on display until March 10 so that artists can receive maximum exposure.

The Art Guild is also introducing a new event called Paint Party. The guild’s first paint party was Friday, Feb. 2. The second paint party will be held Friday, Feb. 16.

Pate said the event is open to a maximum of 10 participants due to limited space and is excited about the exposure it can bring to the community.

“We want to have the opportunity for the public to be exposed to art,” Pate said.

“There is very little art in schools now and kids benefit from art. It gives them a new way to think about things.”

The dates for upcoming February events are as follows:

Sunday, February 11 – 2 p.m. until 4 p.m. Black History Month art show at the Selma Art Guild located at 508 Selma Ave.

Friday, February 16 – 7 p.m. until 9 p.m. – Selma Art Guild “Paint Party” led by Cindy Anderson at the Selma Art Guild located at 508 Selma Ave.

All supplies are provided for $35.
