Selma and the Edmund Pettus Bridge can now be seen on the world’s most popular streaming website.

David Letterman’s “My Next Guest Needs No Introduction” is available on Netflix. The first episode features Selma’s Edmund Pettus Bridge as part of a story about America’s history and where the racial conversation is today.

It begins with former President Barack Obama and Letterman having a conversation about America’s past as well as Obama’s family history.

Throughout the interview, the setting switches from a television studio to Selma, where Letterman and U.S. Congressman from Georgia John Lewis reminisce over the events of Bloody Sunday.

Lewis was 25 at the time of Bloody Sunday, and his participation in the march ended up with him in the hospital for a skull fracture.

Lewis tells Letterman that what unfolded on that day in March 1965 opened the doors for the success of African-American leaders down the line including Obama.

“If it hadn’t been for the March from Selma to Montgomery, there probably is no Barack Obama,” Lewis said.

While the episode did not focus on the city of Selma itself, it helped show how integral of a role the city played in advancing America.

The episode also highlights issues associated with present-day America.

Letterman, Obama and Lewis all discuss how today’s society is still dealing with many of the same issues as people were dealing back in 1965.

Daron Harris, publicist for the Black Belt Community Foundation, acknowledges that there are still racial issues today, but is happy to see prominent figures addressing the issue on a large platform

“I thought all three guys (Letterman, Obama, Lewis) were class-acts who had real moments of self-reflection,” Harris said.

“They showed what Selma and the bridge mean historically. It shows that people outside the state of Alabama respect what happened here and it was nice to see them to pay tribute to something that means so much.”

The filming of Letterman and Lewis on the Edmund Pettus Bridge took place back on Nov. 10. RadicalMedia and the Letterman-owned Worldwide Pants handled production for the 60-minute episode.
