The snow and ice are still having an impact on schools in Selma and Dallas County.

Selma City Schools and Dallas County Schools have both decided to close Friday, marking the fourth day in a row students have missed school due to the winter weather.

Both school systems have already been closed since Tuesday when the threat of snow and ice moved into the area. Students were also out Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

Toya Stiles, director of the Dallas County Emergency Management Agency, said many of the roads in the county are still considered impassable until further notice.

“They’re still impassable until tomorrow (Friday),” Stiles said. “There are still patches of ice on the side of the road in areas where the sun is not able to shine on them to melt the ice.”

Stiles said she has heard several calls over the scanner for traffic accidents due to ice on the roads.

“I’ve heard people being in ditches and running off the roads,” Stiles said. “We’re asking people to stay off the roads, but if they have to get out to drive with extra caution because there are still icy spots out there.”

Dr. Avis Williams, superintendent of Selma City Schools, said road closures made a big impact on her decision to close school Friday. While temperatures are expected to be back up into the low 50s later in the day, many roads could still have ice on them Friday morning.

“After talking with EMA and learning that we still had roads and bridges closed, it’s better for our students and staff not to have to get out on the road because it’s going to freeze back over tonight,” Williams said. “We have quite a few staff members who travel from Montgomery, Prattville or Autauga County, and some of those roads are also still iced.”

Ellwood Christian Academy will also be out Friday. Headmaster Gary Crum said instead of coming back to school for one day of class, he made the decision to keep the school closed until Monday.

Meadowview Christian School students will return to class Friday.

“I know some of the schools are still out, but I rode out to the school today and came across a spot or two that may have had a little ice on it,” said headmaster Mike Blair. “If it was another day of a State of Emergency, we might have stayed out.”

Blair said students would be excused for being late to class due to the road conditions.

Morgan Academy will also be in school. According to a Facebook post from the school’s page, “check-ins and absences will be excused if travel is unsafe in your area.”

According to the National Weather Service, the high in Selma Friday is 52-degrees with a low of 29 Friday night. Temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-60s Saturday and Sunday.
