A Selma doctor’s medical license was suspended in November by the Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama after a complaint was filed against him by the Alabama State Board of Medical Examiners.

Dr. Iqbal Inder Singh, who was licensed in March of 1989, had his license suspended on Nov. 29, 2017. Singh, according to the board, is an anesthesiologist who operates a solo pain practice in Selma.

“The Board of Medical Examiners finds and certifies to the Medical Licensure Commission that the continuation of the authority of Dr. Singh to practice medicine in Alabama may constitute an immediate danger to patients or to the public,” the complaint reads. “And that the board has in its possession evidence to support this finding.”

A copy of the report, which was provided by the Medical Licensure Commission of Alabama, does not list specific allegations. Several pages of the complaint were redacted due to confidential health information.

According to the complaint, the investigation was launched after probable cause was found that Singh was in violation of Alabama Code 34-24-360 (2010).

“Being unable to practice medicine or osteopathy with reasonable skill and safety to patients by reason of illness, inebriation, excessive use of drugs, narcotics, alcohol, chemicals, or any other substance, or as a result of any mental or physical condition,” the law reads.

The complaint requested the Medical Licensure Commission to suspend Singh’s license immediately without a hearing.

An order signed by the commission suspended Singh’s license and ordered him to surrender his license, his Alabama controlled substances registration certificate and all controlled substances in his possession.

Singh’s practice is located on the campus of Vaughan Regional Medical Center, but he has no association with the hospital.

Attempts to reach Singh for comment were not successful Thursday. A voice recording plays when calling Singh’s office.

“Dr. Singh has had surgery. He is out of the office until further notice, and the office is closed at this present time. We will update this message when new information is available,” the recording said. “Please contact a physician of your choice for care and prescriptions, as no prescriptions are being written out of this office at this time.”

The recording said a list of alternate clinics in Alabama is provided on the front window of the office. Patients are asked to contact another physician’s office for care.

“Once you have contacted a physician’s office to see if they are accepting new patients and your particular insurance, you may press zero for the operator line and leave a message giving us the name of that physician and fax number of the physician you choose for care so that we may fax your records,” the recording said.

A hearing before the commission has been scheduled for March 28 at 9:30 a.m. in Montgomery. Singh will have an opportunity to answer the allegations of the administrative complaint filed against him.
