Friday saw a nosedive in temperatures and the cold weather is here to stay for a few days.

According to Birmingham National Weather Service meteorologist Jason Holmes, Dallas County would expect a blustery night with winds reaching 20-25 miles per hour, driving wind chills down to almost zero degrees.

The cold weather is expected to stay all weekend, with Saturday having a high of 43 and a low of 22.

Sunday will feature a high around 44 with a nighttime low of around 24. The winds could stay above 10 mph into Saturday night.

While northern parts of the state could see snow, Holmes says Dallas County is only expected to receive cold rain for the weekend.

The residents of Dallas County can expect a sunny day to commemorate Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day with temperatures reaching the mid-50s.

However, Holmes warns that a secondary cold front will make its way through Dallas County on Tuesday.

This front could bring snow flurries, with a 20 percent chance of snowfall and temperatures expected to drop as low as 17 degrees that night. Wednesday has a high of 37 degrees and Wednesday night has a low of 19 degrees.

It is not believed at this time that the Dallas County area will enter a hard freeze warning for the early part of next week. The hard freeze will likely affect the northern counties greater, but Holmes still has advice for the residents of Dallas County that will be in the middle of the two cold fronts.

“Limit your exposure outside,” said Holmes. “Take all your precautions with pets, the elderly and those without access to heat. It is the same precautions from the cold snap a week and a half ago.”
