Change is inevitable for any organization. Especially those with long histories. Our own Times-Journal has had many publishers, editors and staff writers in its nearly 200-year history.

Now is a time of change for the YMCA of Selma and Dallas County. CEO Ann Murray has stepped down after four years of leading the Y. Chief volunteer officer Ray Thomas will also move to Virginia with his wife in a couple of months.

The new associate director Denisha Hendricks was on the job Tuesday. We wish her the best of luck in guiding the YMCA. Longtime board member Juanda Maxwell will step up to fill Thomas’ role leading the board.

She has a long background in athletic operations and degrees in administration and sports management. This experience is a great fit for leading a health-focused organization like the YMCA.

The Y is important for physical health. It, like all other gyms and health clubs, will see a big boost this month as people make resolutions to lose weight and get in shape.

However, the YMCA is important for the community as a whole and its spiritual health. The Y’s mentoring and programs for youth like basketball, soccer, summer camps and Power Scholars make a positive impact on many young lives and shapes the future citizens of Selma and Dallas County.
