The Selma City Council voted last week to update the city’s garbage ordinance. The part the council updated explains the fines for not participating in required garbage service. People that fail to pay for service can be fined $50 to $200, and each violation after that is $200.

City ordinance requires that all households take  part in garbage service, which is provided by Sea Coast Disposal. While it’s great the council updated the ordinance, without enforcement it will only be words on a piece of paper.

The council should make sure the city’s code enforcement enforces that code and fines people that do not pay for garbage service.

Too often garbage can be seen dumped on the side of the road in Selma. Something needs to be done. Fines need to be enforced. Now that the ordinance is updated, we hope to see code enforcement do its job and write citations for those not paying.
