Mary Lamar Strench Smith, 92, of Louisville, Kentucky, passed away on Dec. 6, 2017, at Baptist Health East after a brief illness.

Mary was born Mary Bibb Lamar in Selma to Mary Bibb Lamar and Law Lamar.

Her great-great-grandfather was William Wyatt Bibb, the first governor of Alabama.

She was a graduate of Selma High School and the University of Alabama, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.

After teaching kindergarten, she worked as a civilian at Craig Air Force Base.

She married Donald Davis Strench, a railroad executive, in 1956 in Selma.

After leaving Selma, she lived in several cities in the South before settling in Louisville in 1968.  Mr. Strench passed away in 1974. Mary later married George F. Smith, who passed away in 2003.

Mary had a long affiliation with St. Francis in the Fields Episcopal Church in Louisville.

She was an avid golfer and bridge player and member of Big Spring Country Club.

Mary was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Bibb and Law Lamar; and sister, Kitty Frazer.

She is survived by her three sons from her first marriage, Donald Strench (Mia), William G. Strench (Mary) and Bibb Strench; her eight grandchildren, William B. Strench, Carol Strench, Anna Strench, Lena Strench, Kaylen Strench, William J. Strench, Davis Strench and Virginia Strench; and by two stepdaughters from her second marriage, Caroline Taylor and Frances Ligler (George) and their families.

Her family extends their gratitude to her doctors and nurses and to the staff at The Episcopal Church Home, particularly the Reed unit, for the attentive and loving care provided to her.

Private graveside services and burial will be at New Live Oak Cemetery in Selma at 11 a.m. on Dec. 16.
