Bi-annual AHSAA reclassification mixes up Dallas County athletics

The Alabama High School Athletics Association announced the new classifications for the 2018-2019 and 2019-2020 school years on Thursday morning.

This year, for the first time, “non-traditional students were included in the average daily membership figures reported for member public schools by the Alabama State Department Education and a competitive balance factor was approved for AHSAA member private schools based on the recommendation of the AHSAA Classification Task Force,” according to the AHSAA press release.

The new alignments send Dallas County from 5A Region 3 down to 4A Region 3 and Keith from 2A Region 4 down to 1A Region 3.

Selma High remained in 6A, but switched from Region 4 to Region 3.

Southside and Ellwood Christian weren’t moved at all.

The class realignment will mix-up area competition, and each team will face new teams beginning in the fall of 2018.

“Being an ex-coach, it really doesn’t matter what class you’re in,” Dallas County principal Willie Moore said. “The competition is still going to be the same. Your preparation is still going to be the same as far as that’s concerned.”
